Adrian,The original Huxley, to these shores, was a convict for a minor crime and emancipated quite soon after transportation. He was given land to farm on the banks of the Georges River in Sydney's south. He befriended the aboriginals of this area but the indigenous people could never quite get their speech to pronounce H or X. So great friends they were called Thomas, Tom Ugly. The bridge that now connects Sydney to its southern suburbs is Tom Ugly's bridge. I have always hoped that this is a fair dinkum description and not just a romantic analogy. The plaque below the bridge backs up my story. Regards Jim
